You can have a ton of fun with your swimming pool in the summer, but with cold weather approaching, now is the time for winterization. If this is your first year owning a pool, you may feel overwhelmed at the tasks you need to complete between now and spring. Fortunately, a pool specialist can do most of them for you, but you should still educate yourself on pool maintenance. Here are three steps you need to stay on top of this winter.

3 Tips for Caring for an In-Ground Pool in Winter

1. Prepare for Winter Freezes

When winterizing a swimming pool, preparation should start before the freeze arrives. Stay aware of when the temperatures are scheduled to drop, and prepare for the worst early on. The last thing you want is to get caught by an unseasonal cold snap. Keep an eye on temperatures as soon as fall begins, and don’t procrastinate.

2. Maintain Chlorine Levels

If you leave water in the pool over winter but don’t maintain its chemical levels, the water will be contaminated when you open the pool in the spring. You don’t need to test the levels as frequently as when the pool is in use, but still check every two months to ensure the levels are safe. Throw away old pool cleaning products at the end of each year because they tend to last only 12 months.

3. Care for the Pool Cover

swimming poolsMost covers can’t withstand much weight, so if the forecast is snow, take it off. If you’ve had a lot of rain, pump the water off of the cover rather than remove the tarp; pumping prevents the excess water from getting into the pool come springtime. If it’s hot, remove the cover, as well; algae thrive in warm, moist conditions, and you could end up with a mold infestation if you don’t allow the pool to breathe.
