No matter how well you maintain your vehicle, there’s a good chance that you’ll eventually require automotive repairs for your engine. If your engine doesn’t start, the key is to figure out exactly what type of repairs are needed. A number of factors could be causing this problem, and it helps to know which one you’re experiencing before taking it to an auto repair shop.

Diagnosing an Engine that Won’t Start

1. Battery Problems

Whether there’s a faulty connection to the battery or the component has simply run out of power, battery problems are the most common reason an engine won’t start. You’ll know it’s the battery if you turn the key, hear a clicking noise, and find that the dashboard and headlights aren’t working. The most effective solution for this issue is to replace the battery, but you may be able to fix it by simply jump-starting the vehicle.

2. Faulty Starter

Automotive RepairsThe starter is an electrical motor that is connected to the battery, and it’s needed to set the engine in motion when the key is turned, so any issues here will prevent the engine from starting. Possible indicators that the starter is to blame include a grinding noise that occurs when you try to start the vehicle, smoke rising from the starting circuit, or a whining noise (also known as freewheeling), which means the starter gear is not engaging the flywheel.

3. Bad Ignition Switch

This switch takes the power from the battery and relays it to the spark plugs to fire up the engine, so when it’s gone bad, the engine won’t start. An easy way to test it is to turn the key to the second position and see if the dashboard lights up. If the dashboard isn’t illuminated, but the headlights turn on, it means the battery is still working but the switch isn’t transferring that power.
