If you’re considering updating your kitchen countertops, you’ve probably already noticed that there are plenty of options to choose from. It’s easy to get intimidated by the choices, which is why prioritizing what you want out of a counter should be your first step. From aesthetics to durability, deciding what’s important will help narrow down the list. Here are three of the most popular materials.

3 Kitchen Countertop Types

1. Laminate

Laminate counters are one of the most cost-effective options out there, ideal for those upgrading on a budget. Despite their lower cost, they still offer high-quality aesthetics and durability.

Kitchen CountertopsLaminate is a plastic-coated synthetic that’s bonded to particleboard. Though it isn’t as strong as some other counter types, it’s a solid surface, meaning there are no pores to absorb bacteria from food spills. It’s also a great low-maintenance option, requiring only soap and water to keep it clean.

2. Tile

If you’re looking to add color or texture to your kitchen, tile is a great way to go, as you’ll have a wide variety of looks to choose from. You can go with all one color or mix and match to create patterns with different colors.

While tile isn’t the most durable counter option, it’s easy to fix if it gets damaged. This is because it’s considerably more affordable to replace one broken tile compared to the entire countertop.

Tile is easy to clean and, as an added bonus, heat-resistant. You can set hot pots and pans right on it without having to worry about damage.

3. Stone

On the opposite end of the cost spectrum from laminate is stone. Marble, granite, and soapstone are all prized for their looks and durability. Though you’ll pay more for these countertops, they’re an investment that can last for generations with proper care and maintenance.

Stone counters will need to be sealed every few years to keep bacteria out. Their daily upkeep is minimal, though. Dish soap and water are all you need to keep them shining.
