The skin care product industry is enormous, with thousands being offered for every imaginable goal or outcome, so it can be hard to choose what’s right for you. Start by eliminating products that contain the following potentially harmful ingredients.

4 Ingredients to Avoid in Your Skin Care Products

1. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate

Sodium lauryl sulfate, or SLS, is a common ingredient in many skin care products, such as body wash, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, and cleanser. Used as a surfactant or emulsifier to make products foamy or creamy, it has been shown to cause skin and eye irritation and may contribute to acne in the mouth or chin area. So many products exist that don’t contain SLS or its cousin sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) that there’s no reason to risk the possible reactions.

2. Parabens

skin-care-productsParabens are preservatives used in most forms of skin and body care, including makeup. Ingredients such as methylparaben, proplyparaben, isopropylparaben, and isobutylparaben are commonly found on product labels.

Parabens are endocrine disruptors that have been linked to breast and skin cancer. Endocrine disruptors cause hormonal imbalances that may, in turn, lead to neurological, developmental, and immunological dysfunction

3. Fragrance

A generic ingredient of “fragrance”  or “parfum” can include harmful chemicals that damage the immune system or cause allergic reactions. No U.S. law requires companies to list the ingredients in their fragrance mixtures, and research has shown evidence of harmful chemicals in many common skin care products.

Makeup, hair products, sunscreen, and baby care also typically contain fragrance, even if they’re labeled “unscented.” Always read the ingredient lists of unscented products to find one that is truly fragrance-free.

4. Phthalates

Phthalates are added to cosmetics as part of fragrance formulas and are often found in makeup remover and nail polish and remover. These endocrine disruptors have been linked to cancerheadaches, and respiratory issues, especially for those who work in nail salons. Phthalates are typically added to plastic products like PVC to keep it supple, so it’s not something you want in your skin care.
