As the winter approaches, your septic tank faces the risk of freezing, which may compromise the functionality of the toilets, sinks, showers, and bathtubs in your home. Since the equipment holds water, freezing could also leave pipes at risk of bursting from the added pressure of the ice. To help you keep your plumbing in good working order all winter long, here are a few ways to insulate your septic unit and plumbing.

How to Prevent Your Plumbing From Freezing

1. Insulate Pipes

All of your home’s outdoor pipes should be insulated. This will prevent them from freezing and potentially bursting.

To choose the right tubular insulation, carefully measure the circumference of the pipes. You can use this measurement to find out what diameter of product you require. For extra protection, wrap the pipes in heat tape before insulating them.

2. Cover the Ground With Mulch

Place mulch over your septic area for an additional barrier against the elements. Whether you use hay, straw, leaves, or another mulching material, the layer of product should be about eight to 12 inches thick. Cover the area above the tank and the drain field.

3. Fix Plumbing Issues

Before the winter arrives, hire a trusted plumber to repair any existing issues. If you haven’t noticed any leaks, you can schedule an inspection to ensure your equipment is working efficiently.

4. Use Warm Water

You can reduce or eliminate frozen areas of the tank by using warm water throughout the day. Take hot baths, run your dishwasher, and aim to complete one warm or hot load of laundry a day.
