For people who have depression, therapy and medication are often effective treatments. However, for some, these treatments are not effective. For people who can’t find relief from any combination of psychotherapy and medication, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a possible option. Below is a guide that discusses this treatment.

What Is TMS?

TMS is a method of stimulating the brain using electromagnetic coils. They’re placed on your scalp near your forehead and deliver pulses to stimulate nerve cell activity in the region of your brain that controls mood and depression. It’s believed that activating these nerves—which show decreased activity in people with depression—can reduce the symptoms of the condition. TMS is considered a safer alternative to electroconvulsive therapy (ECT or shock therapy), which can have some significant side effects related to cognition and memory.

What Is a TMS Session Like?

TMS involves a series of treatments over several weeks, with each treatment lasting 20-50 minutes. During each session, the doctor will determine the best location and intensity for the stimulation and apply the electromagnetic coil to the head to deliver the pulses.

depressionUnlike other forms of brain stimulation, anesthesia is not required, and you’ll remain awake throughout the process. The treatment typically feels like a light tapping on the head, and patients may hear some clicking sounds. Some people may have some slight discomfort on their scalp, develop a slight headache during or after treatment, feel lightheaded, or have some slight spasms or twitches in the face.

Does TMS Therapy Work?

According to research, about 50-60% of the people who undergo TMS therapy notice a significant improvement in their depression symptoms. However, the results are not permanent, and many people need to continue with maintenance sessions, as well as take medication and continue talk therapy, to manage their symptoms.
