Clogged drains are common plumbing problems for homeowners. In addition to preventing wastewater from flowing out of your property, blocked drains may result in water overflowing from your tubs and basins. Fortunately, when you know what causes them, you’ll have a much better chance of preventing them. Here’s what you need to know.

4 Causes of Clogged Drains

1. Putting the Wrong Foods in the Garbage Disposal

Though your garbage disposal is helpful for breaking down food residues, there are certain items it cannot process. Among these are coffee grinds, cooking oils, meat bones, and fibrous vegetables, which often get stuck in the pipes, clogging the drain.

2. Flushing the Wrong Items

As a general rule, keep feminine hygiene products, baby wipes, cotton balls, medication, and dental floss out of your toilets. Cotton balls, for example, will often clump together, causing clogs.

3. Overgrown Tree Roots

When tree roots in your yard grow out of control, they may penetrate your underground plumbing, preventing wastewater from flowing away from your home. To prevent this, don’t plant any trees within 10 feet of your main sewer line.

4. Mineral Buildups

If you have hard water, mineral buildups may form in your drains and pipes. Lime, magnesium, and calcium will create hard masses that prevent water from draining. Use a water softener to reduce the mineral content and prevent blockages.
