Although relocating residences can be trying, the process usually goes smoothly if you’re patient and organized. It’s also helpful to know a handful of tips and tricks. Here are some useful do’s and don’ts when moving into a new apartment.

Do:

Hire movers.

Get recommendations for dependable moving companies from trusted associates. Movers will safely transport your property to your new residence and are especially helpful for moving large or valuable furniture and furnishings. Alternatively, rent a moving van, and enlist friends and family to haul boxes and transport furniture.

Start packing ahead of time.

apartmentsWaiting to pack until the last minute is a mistake. Pack well in advance of moving day. Allow at least four to six weeks to sort through your belongings and organize your possessions before boxing them up.

Packing ahead of schedule will also give you time to establish a system for labeling and color-coding boxes and bins. If you know where possessions belong in your new apartment, unpacking will be a breeze.

Don’t:

Forget to take inventory.

Separate belongings you want to keep, discard, store, sell, or donate into piles. Host a yard sale to make some extra money for your move, or donate any unwanted clothing, furniture, books, or electronics to a local charity or shelter.

Neglect your old place.

A final step in the moving process is cleaning your former residence so that it’s ready for the next tenant. Take a last look around to ensure nothing’s been left behind. Cleaning up an old apartment will increase your chances of getting your security deposit back. Vacuum floors, closets, and drapery, and scour all appliances, including the stovetop and sinks.
