Many of the conveniences in modern cars—think blind-spot detection and push-button ignition—are thanks to the increased use of electronics. Although, this shift to electronic features also comes with the risk of faults and failures that can be difficult for car owners to diagnose on their own. Regular auto maintenance is an excellent way to stay on top of problems, but when something integral stops working, like your power windows, you’ll want to know what the issue is. Knowing what causes power window failure can help you to avoid it, saving you the hassle of opening your door every time you enter a parking garage or go through a drive-thru.

3 Causes of Car Window Failure

1. Window Regulator Faults

A window regulator is the mechanism that moves the window up and down along a track, allowing you to open and close it. These devices regularly go wrong on driver-side windows due to them being the most frequently used, and simple wear-and-tear sometimes results in window failure. A common fault in the mechanism is the cable coming away from the pulley. If you hear a crunching noise when you to try to adjust the window, it’s an indication that the cable is not winding as it should be.

2. Problems with the Window Regulator Motor

The window regulator is powered by a small motor, and if the motor breaks, your up and down buttons will suddenly become useless. If the problem is only with one window, it’s more likely because of a motor failure than it is an issue with your car’s electrics. However, you should ask a professional to check whether the switch, mechanism, or motor is responsible for the windows not working. The motor is sometimes affected by overheating, which is a temporary problem that can be resolved by waiting for it to cool. Scheduled auto maintenance helps to prevent common issues like parts overheating.

3. Damaged Buttons

Buttons can wear out easily, especially if they are pressed too frequently or aggressively. Children will often play with the window buttons, so it is wise to discourage their use as a toy if you want your windows to keep working. The advantage of buttons failing rather than motors is that they are far less expensive to replace. Even if you limit the use of buttons, inevitably, some pieces of equipment will wear out as your car gets older and will eventually need to be replaced.
