Your boiler needs to stay in top shape to provide hot water for all of your cooking and cleaning needs. In addition to hiring a plumbing professional, you can keep your boiler in good condition by establishing some simple habits. Here are five tips for improving your boiler’s efficiency.

5 Ways to Help Your Boiler Run Efficiently

1. Monitor the Feed Water Temperature

Your boiler’s feed water consists of fresh and condensed water, which are looped into the main tank before they’re heated. The feed water should be between 176 to 185 degrees Fahrenheit, because this temperature range provides the fastest water heating time while using the least amount of fuel. Assess the temperature gauge daily to ensure it’s within this range to provide the most efficient operation.

2. Mitigate Shell Leaks

plumbingThe boiler shell is a steel tube that transfers heat through a secondary tube via combustion. If the shell is leaking, the tube may bulge due to wear and tear. Damage like cracks or corrosion can limit how hot the water can get, lowering efficiency. Have a professional assess this plumbing system at least once a year to ensure every piece from the housing to the pipes is properly sealed and in top shape.

3. Remove Soot from the Fireside

Soot tends to build up on the tubes of older boilers. The black gunk can impact fuel use and lower the rate of heat transfer. Regularly remove soot by scrubbing the base with a brush and some water to mitigate the debris.

4. Upgrade to a Newer Model

Most boilers last around 15 years. If your system is more than 10 years old, consider upgrading to a newer model. Boilers with the ENERGY STAR® label offer optimal fuel use for the most efficient water heating. Installing these plumbing fixtures can lower utility bills while still providing plenty of hot water for bathing, washing dishes, and cleaning clothes.

5. Install a Condensate Return System

Boilers create condensation as they heat the water inside the tank. Have a professional install a condensate return system to use this byproduct. This will lower the amount of fuel needed to keep the feed water warm and ready for use. As a result, your plumbing system will use less fuel and less water.
