Glaucoma is a common degenerative eye disease that affects over 3 million Americans. When it goes untreated, it can cause blindness, which cannot be reversed. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent further loss of vision. Know the signs and symptoms of glaucoma so that you can work with an eye doctor to preserve your sight.

Warning Signs of Glaucoma

1. Loss of Peripheral Vision

This disease damages the optic nerve, affecting your peripheral vision first. If you find that you have trouble noticing objects or movement out of the corner of your eye, then you may be losing it. If left untreated, this eventually turns into tunnel vision, or the sensation of only being able to see through a tube.

2. Eye Pain

Eye pain is a common side effect of acute angle-closure glaucoma. It may manifest as a sudden headache behind your eyes or sharp pangs in the eyes. The pain may be so severe that it causes nausea or vomiting.

glaucoma3. Red Eyes

Glaucoma causes fluid to build up in the eye, which cannot regulate the increased pressure. This is called ocular hypertension. The pressure pushes against the delicate parts of your eye and can make them red or cause visible swelling. This swelling also pushes against the optic nerve and causes damage.

4. Halos or Haze

The changes in your vision may cause halos to appear around lights, or there may be a general haze as if you’re trying to see through smudged glasses. This haze also becomes worse around lights.
