If you want to have a successful game of pool or billiards at a pool hall, you have to learn how to maneuver the cue ball. This ball can only be moved when struck with a cue stick. Spinning the ball gives you more control over its direction and final position after it has hit the object ball or cushion. Before you head to your pool hall, consult the following guide to learn how to spin cue balls, and improve your game.

Top Spin

The top spin or “follow” happens when you strike the cue ball with the cue stick tip right above its center. The higher you hit, the better your spin will be. With a follow, the ball travels further on the pool table after hitting the object ball or table edge without slowing. Top spins are useful for preventing the cue from stopping behind other balls that could make the next shot cumbersome to complete.

Bottom Spin

pool hallAlso known as a “draw” or “screwback shot,” the bottom spin occurs when the cue ball has a reverse turn and moves backward instead of forward after hitting the object ball or cushion. Once it connects with another ball at dead-center, it will come to a complete stop and then slowly move back. You can achieve this spin by striking the ball below its center, and it can be done with the cue ball either a few inches away from its target or a foot away from it. The lower you hit the cue ball, the stronger the spin you’ll create.

Side Spin

The side spin isn’t as common as a follow or a draw. To complete the shot, hit the cue ball to the right or left of its center, depending on the direction you want it to travel once the play is made. Mastery of this spin is not required to play well at a pool hall, but it can help you make alternative paths if an object ball blocks the position you want.
