Many homeowners choose hardwood floors because of their beauty and few maintenance requirements. While they’re easy to maintain, many people damage them by cleaning them incorrectly. Here are a few of the most common cleaning mistakes homeowners make—and how to avoid them.

A Guide to Common Wood Flooring Maintenance Mistakes

1. Utilizing the Wrong Cleansers

Most common household cleaners are ammonia-based or made from abrasive chemicals, which can eat away at the finish. Even natural-based cleansers that are vinegar- or baking soda-based can eventually cause damage. Look for oil-based cleansers that are specifically formulated for hardwood floors. They’ll give the wood a beautiful shine and keep it moisturized and in good condition.

2. Choosing a Vacuum Attachment That Scratches the Flooring

The wrong vacuum head can leave minuscule scratches and dents on your floor, causing the wood to deteriorate. Finally, use a small, lightweight vacuum that won’t leave marks with its wheels.

3. Using too Much Water

Many people think hardwood floors should be mopped. However, water can damage your flooring, so the less you use, the better. Instead, use a slightly damp, dry soft cloth or mop head. This will stop water from seeping into the cracks, helping prevent the risk of rot or mildew under the floorboards. Also, never leave water to dry on your hardwood floors. This will wreak havoc on your finish and leave the floorboards vulnerable to damage.
