If you’re diligent about brushing and flossing, you may assume that your teeth are in fairly good shape. However, there are a number of habits that could threaten the health of your teeth, tongue, or gums. Here are a few of the most common bad habits that dentists urge patients to quit sooner rather than later.

Avoid These Bad Dental Habits

1. Using Your Teeth as Tools

Enamel may be the strongest substance in the human body, but it can't withstand constant abuse. Using your teeth to tear open snack bags, rip off price tags, or uncap small bottles, will only serve to wear down the enamel. This will make your teeth more vulnerable to chips, cracks, fractures, and decay. If you’ve had restorative dental work done, using your teeth for anything other than eating could result in damage.

2. Brushing Too Hard

dentistBrushing too vigorously tends to do more harm than good. This is especially true if you use a hard-bristled brush, which can irritate the gums and even cause them to recede, in addition to wearing away the enamel. Because plaque is soft and sticky, you don't need to apply much abrasive power to scrub it away. Opt for a brush with soft bristles, and focus on addressing every surface thoroughly instead of simply brushing with all the force you can muster.

3. Nursing Sugar-Laden Drinks

If you spend the first hour or two of each morning sipping a flavored latte, it will take a toll on your oral health. There’s nothing wrong with enjoying gourmet coffee; however, if you sip the beverage through the morning, your teeth will be exposed to sugar the entire time. The sugar will attract bacteria, which will have plenty of time to nestle in the nooks and crannies of your teeth.

For optimal oral health, avoid drinks loaded with sugar altogether. However, if you absolutely can't resist, enjoy them quickly, and rinse your mouth or brush once you've finished to keep plaque and tartar at bay.
