Getting a new garage door installation benefits your home in several ways, including increasing privacy and safety while improving the look of your house. A quality door also increases your home’s value, as buyers won’t have to pay for replacements themselves. If you plan on installing one soon, here’s how you should prepare.

What Should I Do to Prepare for a Garage Door Installation?

1. Check Your Availability

Schedule the garage door installation when you or another adult family member will be home to give the contractors access or you can leave access via an unlocked side door. As a professional courtesy, call them as soon as possible if you have to reschedule, and avoid delaying the installation by more than a month. Also, while you’re on the phone, ask them questions, such as how long the process will take and what your design options are.

2. Remove Clutter

Clean your garage, as well, so they have space to work without damaging your property or tripping over loose items. You can also take this as an opportunity to organize your garage—sell or get rid of items you no longer want.

3. Park Your Cars on the Street

Move your cars to the street or a section of your lawn that isn’t near the septic system, if applicable. If street parking is limited in your area, park a few blocks away or ask your neighbors if you can use their driveway. Re-assure them that your vehicles will only be there for a few hours.

4. Keep Children & Pets Safe

Place your dog in an outdoor pen during the installation process. You do not want pets scurrying under contractors’ feet or startling them in any way, such as by barking. Also, keep your children away from the work site to avoid further contractor distractions and power equipment-related injuries.
