Since 1999, Botox® has been the most common aesthetic procedure in America. More than 1.8 million people get Botox every year to help reduce the look of lines and wrinkles and create a more youthful appearance. If you’re considering injections for yourself, here are a few do’s and don’ts to keep in mind to ensure optimal results.

Do:

Stay upright after your procedure.

After your injections, remain upright for at least two hours to prevent the Botox from dispersing away from the injection site. This ensures that you get long-lasting results.

Move your face.

Moving the parts of your face that have been injected can help the Botox reach the cells it needs to work. During the first hour post-treatment, make exaggerated facial expressions such as raising and lowering your eyebrows, grinning, frowning, and wiggling your nose.

Apply ice.

Using an ice pack before and after your injections can help numb the area to reduce pain and reduce the likelihood of bruising. If you do bruise at the injection site, gently apply vitamin K gel to help speed healing.

Don’t:

Touch the injection site.

BotoxAvoid touching the injected area for 24 hours. Massaging or rubbing the treated area can cause the Botox to spread away from the muscles. Be especially gentle while washing your face for a day or two after treatment.

Wear makeup.

Avoid applying makeup or having a spray tan for at least a few days post-injection. These products can potentially cause infection to the injection site. Getting facials or other skin treatments within 24 hours can also increase irritation, so wait to schedule any other treatments until your injections have healed.

Exercise.

If you want a strenuous workout, do it before your injections. Avoid working out post-injections because excess movement and increased body temperature can increase blood flow to the injection site and move the treatment away from where you want it.
