Although many types of roofing materials exist, your options are limited if you own a home or business with a flat roof. Traditional elements, such as shingles, slate, and metal, don’t provide adequate protection from rain and snow on low-slope surfaces. As such, rubber roofing has become a popular alternative. Below is an overview of what you should know to determine if this is a reliable choice for your residential or commercial application.

A Beginner’s Guide to Rubber Roofing Materials

What Is Rubber Roofing?

Officially referred to as ethylene propylene diene terpolymer (EPDM) rubber roofing, this lightweight material is a single-ply membrane made from eco-friendly ingredients, including sawdust, recycled tires, and slate dust. It comes in black and white with various widths to ensure the proper fit for a broad range of job specifications. It’s usually applied in flat sheets but can also be installed like shingles to mimic slate tile roofs.

Installation Process

Fully adhered systems require the sheets of material to be glued directly to the roof’s insulation. A ballasted system is loosely laid over the insulation and held in place with pavers or river-washed stones. Mechanically attached systems are the most common, as they’re typically quicker and more cost-effective to install. The rubber material goes over the insulation, and screws are drilled through the insulation boards and into the metal deck below. Then, the membranes are heat-welded together to create a watertight seal between sheets.

Benefits

In most cases, rubber roofing lasts at least 15-20 years. However, if contractors install it properly, you maintain it well, and expose it to minimal foot traffic, the roof often has a lifespan of more than 30 years. The material is highly durable and can withstand extreme temperatures without becoming brittle or cracking. It also offers a substantial barrier against heavy rain and snow and has excellent resistance to fire, UV radiation, wind, and hail.
