Dentist Guide to Pregnancy & Oral Health

Common Oral Health Issues

Pregnant women experience elevated levels of plasma sex steroid hormones, such as estrogen and progesterone. Studies have shown that these elevated levels have a dramatic effect on the periodontium, or the tissues that surround the teeth. Pregnant women also often experience dietary changes, which may affect their dental health.

Up to 75 percent of women experience gingivitis, which is an inflammation of the gums. When left untreated, this can lead to periodontal disease or gum disease. This condition can result in lost teeth. Other common health issues include cavities and loose teeth. The bacteria in cavities can be passed onto the baby both during pregnancy and breastfeeding after birth, which may affect their dental health later in life.

How to Maintain Health Throughout Pregnancy

dentistThe best thing you can do for your oral health is to see your dentist regularly for a checkup. Tell them that you are pregnant – or planning to get pregnant – so they know to look out for the common issues. Dental X-rays are safe to have done during your pregnancy — they use a very small amount of radiation, and you’ll be covered by a special apron and collar.

Keep up with your oral hygiene, even if you are tired or feeling nauseous. Brush at least twice a day and floss once a day. Pay close attention to your oral health. See your dentist immediately if you notice any signs of trouble such as loose teeth, pain when brushing, red and swollen gums, bleeding while flossing, or toothaches.
