As temperatures fall, many homeowners prepare to shut down their AC units for the season and fire up their furnaces for the first time. Though this process can be fairly straightforward, there are a few maintenance tasks you should perform to keep your equipment in proper working order throughout the coming winter and beyond. Here’s what you should know.

A Guide to Autumn HVAC Maintenance

1. Clean Filters & Vents

As the AC runs throughout the summer, it can sometimes pushes solids like dust and pet hair through the ventilation system. The filter is meant to catch most of these contaminants, but you still need to remove it periodically to clean or replace it. Aim to change your filters about once a month and at the start of every new season.

2. Clear the Outdoor AC Unit

Clear away any leaves or debris from the outdoor unit, and consider trimming trees or plants if their branches are hanging over the equipment. You can also purchase a cover to provide protection throughout the winter. Remember to remove it before you turn your AC back on again in the Spring.

3. Update Thermostat Settings

In the summer, make your home more energy-efficient by setting the temperature a few degrees warmer than usual during the day while everyone is out and then lowering it to your preferred temperature at night. In the winter, take the opposite approach. A programmable thermostat allows you to set these adjustments ahead of time so you don’t have to worry about it.
