More and more individuals are turning to LASIK to address vision impairments. This quick and painless procedure can be used to correct farsightedness, nearsightedness, and astigmatism. Here is some helpful insight into what you can expect throughout the laser eye surgery process.

What to Expect With LASIK Surgery

Preparation

Laser eye surgeries must be performed while the patient is awake with their eyes open. To ensure that the eyes remain open, a surgeon will apply anesthetic drops to the eyes prior to the procedure to numb them. They will then place a lid speculum over the eyes to keep them open during the entire process.

During the Surgery

LASIKAfter preparation, the surgeon will use a precision laser to create a flap in the cornea. They’ll then lift and fold back this flap in order to direct the laser into the cornea.

The eye tissue and surrounding cells will be sculpted and/or extracted to suit the patient’s unique vision needs. The entire process takes only about half an hour from start to finish.

Aftercare

It’s important to arrange a ride home following the procedure, as your vision will be blurry. You may also feel a slight irritation in your eyes. If you do experience irritation, your surgeon will prescribe you eye drops to prevent discomfort, inflammation, and infection.

Typically, the healing process is relatively quick, with full vision returning in a few short days.
