The winter weather is on the horizon, and it's that time of year for boat owners to move their vessels to storage. Yet, a combination of the lack of use and extreme temperatures can wreak havoc on the outboard motors, resulting in damage and the need for spring repairs. For that reason, you need to winterize the equipment properly at the end of the fall. Below is how to do it correctly to ensure your boat’s safety.

Stabilize the Fuel

Long periods of inactivity allows fuel to separate and break down. This process can end up clogging fuel lines and carburetors. Luckily, it's easily avoided by adding a fuel treatment. Simply fill up the tank to 95%, add the stabilizer treatment, and run the engine for 10 to 15 minutes to ensure that the mixture has accessed all the equipment.

Treat the Motor

Since it's impossible to remove all of the moisture from the system, you need to follow up with some antifreeze. This step prevents the motor's lines from freezing, reducing the risk of ruptures. Opt for a non-toxic solution that's rated to withstand the coldest winter temperatures in your area, and make sure that the engine is warmed up before injecting the coolant.

Once the coolant has had time to circulate, it's time to fog it to prevent rust. Using fogging oil, spray each individual carburetor within the engine while it's still running. The process creates a lot of smoke, and it should end with the motor stalling out.

Clean & Lubricate

Before storing the outboard motor, it's important to change and fill up the oil. This prevents any debris in the system from settling and creating blockages, along with preventing water from entering the oil tank. This is also the ideal time to lubricate all moving parts and check for damage on the shaft and propeller.
