You might think that since your plants and grass don’t do much growing in winter, you don’t have to keep up with lawn care during the colder months. By being proactive, though, you can help assure lush and green grass growth come spring. Find out what you should do in December to nurture lawn health so your future self will thank you.

Fertilize

While plant growth stagnates in winter, the roots underneath the earth’s surface are still alive and well. Give them the nutrients they need by applying a slow-release fertilizer with nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorous.

Aerate

To make the most of winter fertilization, aerate your lawn while fall temperatures are still mild and the grass hasn’t gone completely dormant. By making space in the soil, aeration allows oxygen and nutrients to more easily reach hungry roots. This assures lawn health and plants that are better able to fight off pests, diseases, and weeds.

Spot-Treat Weeds

Take care of broadleaf weeds in December. Tackling them now decreases the odds of them multiplying rapidly come spring. The period from Thanksgiving to Christmas is also ideal for broadly spray-treating for Poa annua, or annual bluegrass.

This pesky grass can ruin your lawn health as it completes with tall fescue for water, oxygen, and nutrients in the soil. In winter, it will be in an immature stage, allowing you to nix it before it matures. If it survives until spring, you won’t be able to spray it without ruining the fescue, too.
