A remodeling project can transform your home. While the results are certainly worth the wait, the process can get messy. Working with lumber may fill your home with dust and debris, covering your furniture and making you sneeze. If you’re concerned about cleanliness during your remodel, try out the following tips.

How Can You Keep Your House Clean While Remodeling?

1. Store What You Can

Before the renovation begins, consider what you can remove from each area that will be impacted, including those rooms that may be subject to drifting dust. Store furniture temporarily, place framed photos in boxes, and roll up your rugs to put in the basement or garage.

lumberGetting these items out of the way will prevent them from ending up covered with lumber dust. This will save you a considerable amount of cleanup time later on.

2. Block Off the Area

If possible, block off the remodeling zone during the project. If you’re remodeling the kitchen, for example, hang a plastic curtain in the doorways. You should cover pass-throughs and windows as well. Doing so will keep all the dust in one area, reducing the need to vacuum and clean more rooms.

3. Cover Your Furniture

As lumber debris flies around your home, it can settle on furniture. You might find dust in fabric and in the detail nooks of wooden chairs and tables. These areas are especially tricky to clean, so cover these pieces before the renovation if you’re unable to store them elsewhere.

Drape plastic sheets over couches, chairs, and tables. To keep using the furniture while the remodel is going on, cover the plastic with old blankets and fabric sheets during dinner or TV time, then go back to just plastic when you’re not using the room.

4. Clean Daily

No matter how much you try to keep lumber dust and other debris contained, some mess is inevitable. Luckily, cleaning and dusting every day will prevent it from getting out of control.

Vacuum wooden floors, carpet, and furniture, taking time to dust hard-to-reach areas. A high-quality contractor will be sure not to leave a mess behind, but keeping your home dust-free can give you peace of mind through the renovation, whether you’re DIYing the project or working with a professional.
