According to the National Fire Protection Association, an average of seven people died in home fires each day in 2018. You can’t completely avoid certain fire-causing activities, like using your stove or dryer. But, equipping your house with fire extinguishers can help control small outbreaks. Keep at least one fire extinguisher on each level of your home, and follow these safety guidelines.

What Situations Require a Fire Extinguisher?

1. Lit Candles

Fire-Extinguishers-Olive-Branch-MSBetween 2012 and 2016, candles caused about 8,200 house fires. To prevent house fires, don’t burn candles on a flammable surface or within a 12-inch radius of anything flammable. Always blow them out before bed, and never leave a room with a lit candle.

2. Stoves

Cooking is the top cause of house fires, and that includes using your stove. Because of this, a kitchen is an excellent spot for your fire extinguisher. Keep any flammable tools, like oven mitts and towels, away from the heat. Avoid wearing loose clothing, and keep long hair tied up.

3. Space Heaters

Every four out of five home heating fire deaths are caused by space heaters. Give space heaters a three-foot radius from any objects, and do not use them overnight either in your bedroom or another room.

4. Smoking

Always smoke outside, and fully soak butts with water or sand before throwing them away. Put out butts in deep, wide trays that cannot easily tip over. Keep matches, lighters, and any cigars or cigarettes away from children.

5. Dryer Lint

Clean the lint trap out after every use, and check your exhaust pipe once a month. When your dryer is not in use, make sure the outside vent is clean and that there is nothing blocking the pipe.
