Neck pain can seriously hamper your daily quality of life, making it difficult to focus at work, drive a car, or fall asleep at night. Sometimes, the solution is as simple as changing your day-to-day habits—such as your sleeping position. Other times, neck pain may be due to more serious underlying medical conditions. Discover some possible causes below.

5 Causes of Neck Pain

1. Poorly Configured Work Space

If you have a desk job, have the desk and computer set up to avoid straining the ligaments and muscles in your neck. You should sit with your monitor an arm's length away. Your chair should be at a height so that your thighs are parallel to the floor.

2. Unusual Sleep Position

If you notice neck pain upon waking, your sleeping setup may be to blame. Your pillow should support your neck so that it doesn't "sag" in the middle. If you can, sleep on your back to keep your spine aligned—not curled up in fetal position, for example.

3. Excessive Phone Use

If you are constantly swiping through social media on your phone, you are likely frequently angling your head downwards. Painful "text neck" occurs when people are hunched over their phones. Instead of hunching, hold your phone up to eye level. Also, take breaks to stretch your neck and back.

4. Whiplash

neck-pain-Monroe-GAThis is common after a car accident when you are hit from behind. This causes the head to jerk forward and then snap back, stressing the vertebrae and damaging surrounding tissues. Whiplash can usually be treated with medications and physical therapy. Symptoms can also develop over time, so don’t rule this out immediately.

5. Arthritis

Arthritis is characterized by inflammation of the joints. It can lead to pain, stiffness, and swelling. An imaging test like a CT scan can be used to examine bones and cartilage to diagnose arthritis. Depending on the diagnosis, treatment may include medications and physical therapy.
