If you’re going out of town for a period in winter, be sure to winterize your water well and pipes before leaving. This simple task will spare you from damages that can occur when water freezes and expands in the water system. Below are a few easy-to-follow measures to take, so you can be prepared for the season ahead.

5 Steps to Winterize Your Water Well & Pipes

1. Turn Off the Water Supply

Shut off the power and ensure that the pump breaker inside the breaker panel is switched off. Leave the main breaker in the "on" position so the pump will not start if someone accidentally trips the switch by mistake. This step will prepare you to clear the pipes.

2. Drain Water

After shutting off the water supply, drain the water lines by turning all the taps on and flushing the toilets. Keep all faucets open until water stops flowing through the pipes. This will prevent leftover water from freezing and expanding in the pipes, potentially causing them to crack or burst.

3. Disconnect the Wires

4. Loosen the Clamps

If you own a shallow well with a jet pump, use a flathead screwdriver to unfasten the hose clamps connecting the feed and pump lines to the pump. To avoid water spillage, set a bucket under these attachments.

5. Put Up Signs & Tapes

For additional safety, place signs over your water sources and tape cords, wires, and the ends of the feed lines. This will prevent mishaps and help you recall where the wiring should be attached when you need to use the water system again.
