If English isn’t your first language, you’ve worked hard to learn a language that can be complicated. If you have a preschool-aged child, they can have an easier time with the process because their brains can soak up all those complicated spellings, sounds, and grammatical rules. To give your child a head-start, use the following tips to your advantage.

3 Ways to Help Bilingual Preschoolers With Reading & Comprehension

1. Dual-Language Books

If your child already knows another language from hearing you speak it, practice reading dual-language books that offer a comparison to English. As your child sees the word of their favorite animal written in both English and their first language, they’ll recognize the connection. For best results, make sure each book you show them is similar in reading level and content.

2. Emphasize Your Words

preschoolIn addition to the pictures in children’s books, your preschoolers can learn about your words from how you say them. For example, if you’re reading about a character who made a discovery, speak with excitement and wonder. If the characters have learned something suspenseful, use an apprehensive, astonished tone. The more expressive you are, the easier it will be for your child to lock these words and phrases into their vocabulary.

3. Use Universal Skills

Reading isn’t the only way for your child to soak up another language. There are skills that parents around the world use to promote memorization. For example, you can teach your child a song or encourage them to come up with rhyming words. Or, use a word game, like matching sets of flashcards or playing sight word bingo, to make the process fun and memorable.
