It’s frightening to run out of gas when you're on the road. Thankfully, in this day of smartphones and fuel delivery services, it's not nearly as inconvenient or difficult as it used to be. Here's how to solve this problem quickly and safely.

What Should You Do If Your Engine Dies?

1. Park Safely

When your fuel is low, you should at least have a few seconds of warning from a sputtering engine or your fuel gauge. When this happens, try to maneuver to the side of the road. If possible, park somewhere visible, and turn on your hazard lights. However, don't try to move the car if it dies in the middle of the road; standing outside your vehicle on the pavement is dangerous.

2. Call for Help

If you weren't able to get off the road or you aren't in a safe spot, call 911. The police will get there quickly, minimizing the risk that another car will collide with yours. If you are parked safely, call a towing company. Many offer other 24-hour roadside assistance services, including fuel delivery service.

3. Stay Safe

Make sure the ignition is turned off; you can cause damage if you try to start your car with an empty tank. You should also check that it's safe to add gas when help arrives.
