You want your kids to have a scary good time this Halloween—and, perhaps, to indulge a bit yourself. However, while candy may bring a smile to one’s face, it is not always best for that smile. Rather than abstaining, the guide below offers advice from a dentist for celebrating the holiday responsibly.

4 Ways to Treat Your Mouth This Halloween

1. Avoid Sour Candy

Surprisingly to some, sour candy is among the worst kinds of snacks for your dental health. Not only does it contain sweet elements, but it has acidic qualities that erode enamel—and usually comes in a gummy form that clings to teeth. Therefore, encourage your child to trade these for dark chocolate or some other prize.

2. Avoid Long-Lasting Candy

dentistAlso on the problematic list of candies are lollipops, which kids have to suck on for long periods of time at risk of overexposing their teeth to sugar. Bacteria in their mouth will turn this coating into acid. If they want something that lingers, dentists recommend offering them sugar-free gum instead. Chewing a piece helps produce saliva, which can help neutralize mouth acids.

3. Set Limits

While it can be fun for your children to spend all night going from door to door, filling up their pumpkin-shaped baskets to the brim, they’ll end up with far more candy than is healthy for them to consume—even over several weeks. Therefore, establish boundaries. Give your children a few pieces after every dinner as a treat without letting them overindulge.

4. Brush & Floss

Kids need to brush their teeth for two minutes at least twice a day to avoid cavities. Dentists also recommend flossing to remove lingering food particles between teeth. This is especially important if they have consumed sticky substances. Consider gifting them a new toothbrush around this time to ensure effective oral care—and replacing it again in about three months.
