Laying a loved one to rest is an emotional experience. Additionally, there are administrative aspects to take care of after a funeral service to ensure the deceased’s affairs are in order. The below checklist can keep you organized and prevent you from feeling overwhelmed.

5 Tasks to Take Care of After a Funeral

1. Get Copies of the Death Certificate

You can ask the funeral director to arrange for duplicates of the death certificate. You will likely need many copies, as this document will be used to close various accounts. The cost may be $10 to $20 per copy, and most people ask for at least a dozen.

2. Notify the Social Security Administration

Often, the funeral services director will take care of this step for you; otherwise, you can call the office at 1 (800) 772-1213. Make sure to have your loved one's Social Security card on hand when you call.

3. Close & Transfer Insurance & Financial Accounts

Look into the deceased’s insurance policies. You should cancel their health insurance, and notify any life insurer accordingly. Also, you can close bank accounts, transferring remaining funds as specified according to the will. If there are joint accounts, you’ll need to transfer these to sole ownership.

4. Shut Down Day-to-Day Services

You may need to terminate a lease if they lived alone—and shut off gas, water, and electricity. You also have to figure out what to do with magazine or video streaming subscriptions and social media accounts.

5. Meet With a Lawyer About the Will

Many of the above points will be addressed by the deceased’s will. This document can cover everything from who should get their life insurance and savings funds to what to do with their social media. Sit down with an attorney to go through this legal paperwork and ensure your loved one’s final wishes are met.
