Porcelain veneers can cover up issues like discolored or chipped teeth to improve the look of your smile. If you’re thinking about getting them, look into what the process entails with the following guide.

What Are Veneers?

Veneers are thin layers of porcelain designed to cover specific teeth. They’re custom-made and bonded over teeth to improve smile brightness, reduce the appearance of gaps, or cover up chips or cracks. Since porcelain is strong and non-porous, it doesn’t crack or stain easily.

How a Dentist Performs the Procedure

porcelain veneersIf you’re interested in getting veneers, your dentist will first need to evaluate your teeth and take some X-rays and molds. If you’re a good fit for the procedure, they’ll also make an impression of the tooth or teeth in question and send them to a lab that creates the actual veneer.

When you return, your dentist will make sure the veneer fits properly, then remove some of the enamel from the front of your tooth. Once that’s complete, they’ll attach the veneer permanently using cement.

Aftercare

Your dentist may have you schedule a follow-up visit to make sure your teeth and gums are responding well to the procedure. Aside from that, you should care for veneers just as you would your natural teeth. You can still get cavities or tooth decay since the rest of your teeth are still intact, so brush and floss daily and continue to schedule regular dental visits.
