Whether you bought your home before you had children or moved in when your children were young, your house probably feels much smaller now than it did then. Even if you aren’t ready to buy a new home, you can still make your home more spacious through home improvement and remodeling projects. Here are three projects that can help give everyone enough space.

3 Home Improvement Projects for Growing Families

1. Build an Addition

If you have the space on your property, an addition can add square footage for extra bedrooms or a family room, while also freeing up existing space. Although it’s a substantial investment, an addition can increase your home’s value while accommodating your growing family.

If you aren’t ready for an addition, or would like to try a less permanent solution before committing to a larger home improvement project, consider repurposing unused space in your home. A finished basement or attic, for instance, can be used for multiple purposes and may be less expensive than an addition.

2. Add Storage

A contractor can help you identify unused spaces in your home as well as areas that can be reconfigured for more efficiency. For example, your home improvement contractor might be able to add drawers or shelves under the stairs or carve out a corner of the kitchen for a built-in breakfast nook, home office, or homework area.

3. Add a Bathroom

As your kids get older, it gets more difficult to make sure everyone has time to get ready in the bathroom each morning — or access the room when they need it. If you spend too much time coordinating bathroom access, consider adding a bathroom to your home.
