One of the weapons being used in the fight against cervical cancer is the Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure (LEEP). The 10-minute treatment is typically performed if a gynecologist discovers abnormal cells through a biopsy or Pap smear test. After an anesthetic is applied to the cervix and the surrounding area, an electrical wire loop is safely inserted into the cervix with a surgical instrument to remove the cells. The patient’s blood vessels are then sealed to prevent bleeding. If you’re scheduled to receive a LEEP treatment, the guide below offers advice for aftercare.

Do:

Avoid strenuous activity.

To help the cervix recover and minimize any bleeding and pain, gynecologists advise patients to avoid lifting heavy objects, exercising, and other strenuous activities. Take it easy for about a week after the treatment or according to your doctor’s instructions.

Schedule follow-up visits.

After the procedure, attend follow-up appointments with your gynecologist so that they can re-examine your cervix. They will look for any signs of infection, discharge, or heavy bleeding. If you experience any of these symptoms, along with chills or a fever, before your follow-up visits, bring it to their attention right away.

Don’t:

Take tub baths.

Submerging yourself in bathwater may slow down the recovery process and can cause an infection. Stick to showers or sponge bathing for a few weeks. In addition to keeping large amounts of water away from the cervix, patients should also avoid inserting tampons.

Forget to take over-the-counter or prescription pain medication.

gynecologistIf you’re experiencing abdominal pain, ibuprofen or acetaminophen can offer relief. Unless your doctor says it’s safe, avoid taking aspirin and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS). Your gynecologist can also give you a prescription for pain if over-the-counter products are not adequate.
