No one expects a fire to break out at home. However, it can happen—especially during the busy holiday season, when owners often have holiday lights and space heaters plugged in. Other factors, like faulty wiring that isn’t addressed by an electrician, can also create a hazard. However, electrical fires are different than other types of blazes. The guide below explains how to put them out to keep your family safe.

How to Defuse an Electrical Fire

1. Cut the Power

If you can do so safely, pull the power cable connected to the ignited or sparking electrical device from the wall. This will cut the current responsible for starting the fire. If the fire is coming from lighting fixtures or electrical features wired to the circuit, flip the switches on your breaker box to cut power to them. If you are uncertain about which switches refer to which areas of the house, have your electrician walk you through them during their annual inspection.

2. Smother

Small fires can usually be stopped by smothering. First, use baking soda. This will cut off the oxygen supply fueling the fire. For slightly larger fires, use a tightly woven fabric like wool or 100% polyester. Synthetic fabrics can also get the job done. Never use silk, thin-woven items, or untreated linen. It’s wise to invest in a flame-retardant blanket as part of your fire prevention plan.

3. Use the Fire Extinguisher

You should have yours professionally inspected and tested once a year to ensure it works. Never use water to put out the fire. If there’s an active electrical current, you can receive a fatal shock.

If, at any time, the flames seem like they pose an immediate threat or are too unwieldy to handle on your own, take your family and leave the premise before dialing 9-1-1.
