A backyard deck provides a host of benefits, from increased property value to improved outdoor space. However, to truly reap the benefits of this amenity, you need to keep it in top-quality shape by routinely staining the material. But how can you tell when your deck needs a new coat? For the best results, consider the following.

How to Determine When You Should Stain Your Backyard Deck

1. Current Condition

If you’ve already stained your deck, you’ll need to check the existing coat before getting a new one. Lightly spray the surface with a hose. If the material absorbs the water, you can move forward. However, if the water beads up and sits on the surface, the existing coat is still working and doesn’t need to be replenished.

2. Season

backyard deckThe ideal time to stain your deck is either early spring or mid-autumn. The optimal temperature is around 75 degrees Fahrenheit, although it can be as low as 50 degrees and as high as 90. If the temperature is too low, the stain could crack. If it’s too high, it will evaporate. You should also choose a day when the forecast predicts little to no humidity. If the air is too humid, the stain won’t set properly.

3. Time

Schedule your appointment for when the stain will have time to dry for at least two hours without direct sunlight. Most homeowners find it’s easiest to work in the late afternoon right or early morning. You should also plan to stay off the deck for at least two days while the stain sets.
