Since boilers are inactive during the warmer months, they often encounter problems in the winter. Many boiler issues will need to be fixed by an HVAC contractor to ensure that they are dealt with effectively. Below are some of the most common issues with boilers.

Boiler Problems to Watch Out for

1. Leaking

Loose or broken components, such as a pressure valve or pump seal, can cause dripping or leaking. Leaks also stem from corroded parts or overly high pressure in your boiler. To avoid further complications, hire a qualified HVAC contractor to fix the leak instead of doing it yourself.

2. The Pilot Light Goes Out

Your pilot light keeps the boiler heated. If the pilot light goes out, it’s likely due to a faulty thermocouple or damaged seals. Check that there isn’t a draught blowing the flame out, and confirm that other gas appliances are working. After you check, call an HVAC contractor or your gas supplier.

3. Low Pressure

Look at the gauge to check the pressure level of your boiler. If the needle is below one, then the pressure is too low, and the boiler will need to be re-pressurized. Low pressure is caused by leaks, faulty valves, or issues with the expansion vessel. If your radiators have recently been bled, this could also explain the problem.

4. The Radiators Don’t Heat Up

If your radiator is only getting hot at the bottom, this could be due to rusty pipes, air build-up, or an issue with the boiler pump. If this happens, call an HVAC contractor to bleed the radiators.

5. The Boiler Switches Itself Off

If your boiler is switching itself off, it could be the result of some of the issues detailed above, such as low water pressure. Thermostat problems or air trapped in the system might also explain the problem. Frozen condensate pipes can lead to your boiler shutting down because it switches itself off as a safety measure. Ask a professional to insulate your pipes to avoid this complication.
