Whether you’re moving to a condo across the street or a house halfway around the world, relocating is inherently stressful. Combine that with the holidays, and moving at the end of the year is especially overwhelming. If you’re planning to relocate in November or December, here are a few tips for navigating the process with ease.

3 Tips for Moving Over the Holidays

1. Put Some Decorations Aside

The holidays are a time for celebration. While it makes sense to leave most of the decorations in storage so you have less to pack and unpack, taking out a few of your favorite items will make both houses feel festive. For example, you could hang a wreath on the front door and place a small tabletop tree on the counter. Such reminders of the season will put you in a celebratory mood even as you’re packing up.

2. Shop Strategically on Black Friday

movingMoving supplies, including boxes, bubble wrap, and tape, can add up fast, so try to stock up on Black Friday. It’s also wise to take advantage of any big furniture sales if your next home will be bigger and need some additional pieces. You can even arrange to have the furniture delivered to the new place once it’s ready so you don't have to worry about transporting it from the old house.

3. Trade off Hosting Duties

See if any relatives are interested in hosting the big family party this year so you don't have to worry about planning anything at your packed-up old place or half-furnished new place. In exchange, you can offer to host next year. If no one else has the space and trading off isn't an option, suggest a potluck so you can at least avoid cooking.
