If you've recently lost a loved one, holding a funeral to honor them can help bring comfort and closure. There are several different ways to do this, and every family is different. However, there are a few basic approaches that are most common in the US.

How Can I Honor My Loved One With a Funeral?

1. Graveside Service

Also called a committal service, this event can be held in addition to a traditional funeral or can be a standalone event. It takes place at the actual burial site and may involve lowering the casket into the ground. It can also include a eulogy, religious readings, and military honors. It's usually shorter than a traditional funeral.

2. Traditional Funeral Service

FuneralsThis can be a formal religious service or may be secular. It's usually held at a funeral home or a chapel, but it can also be held in other locations. It can include eulogies, music, and readings, as well as displays of photos, flowers, and belongings to remind guests of your loved one. A traditional funeral service can be accompanied by other events, such as viewings, visitations, graveside services, and receptions.

3. Memorial Service

A memorial service differs from a funeral because there is no body present. It's often held when the family has opted for cremation rather than burial, or when there are separate public and private services, such as for a well-known member of the community. A memorial service contains the same elements as a funeral, and family members may also scatter their loved one's ashes at this time.
