Just like a car or home appliance, a computer is a machine that requires maintenance to function at optimal levels. Dust and particles can build up on computer hardware, damaging the components over time. The software also retains all of your files and applications, which will eventually minimize the effectiveness of the computer. To maximize your efficiency, follow these simple steps.

Exterior Cleaning

Computer

To start, use a can of compressed air to blow dust off the computer case and use a soft cloth to remove anything that remains. A damp cloth may be used for tougher areas, but avoid using one that’s dripping or oversaturated. Remember to shut off computer hardware devices before performing maintenance, especially if liquids are involved.

Monitor

Computer HardwareWhile particles on your screen may be annoying, a microfiber cloth will pull most of them away. For the remaining grit, use a 50/50 solution of vinegar and water. Dampen a cloth with the solution and wipe carefully.

Mouse

The bottom of your computer mouse attracts gunk over time, which can make it move more slowly. Use the vinegar mixture to clean off the bottom and top of the mouse. If crumbs or hairs are interfering with the light-sensor, remove them with tweezers.

Keyboard

Most keyboards are designed to keep particles out. However, pushing the keys down while cleaning can force those crumbs under the keys. To prevent this, hold the keyboard upside down and shoot compressed air between the keys. Use a damp cloth with the vinegar solution to clean tougher stains, and place the keyboard upside down on a towel to dry.

Interior Cleaning

Files

Click the Start button and select the File Explorer icon. Then, select the drive you'd like to remove files from and enter an asterisk in the Search field. Select the Size column to organize the folders, and try to get rid of larger files that you no longer use. You won't be able to delete files that are required to run Windows, but you will create some much-needed space on your hard drive.

Unused Programs

There may also be old games or applications you no longer use still resting on the hard drive and taking up storage space. To remove them, right-click the Start button, select Settings, and then click Apps and Features. Go through the list and click the Uninstall button next to the applications you'd like to remove. If the application is grayed out, it can't be removed.
