The temperate New Mexico climate means that you don’t need to fully winterize your boat for the off-season. Simple maintenance will keep it in pristine condition over the winter. Prepare your boat before placing it in storage with the steps below.

Pre-Storage Boat Maintenance Checklist

1. Clean the Hull

The end of the season is a good time for deep cleaning. Wash off the hull and propellers with cleaner designed for your boat’s finish. Use a soft brush or microfiber cloth to apply the soap. Rinse it thoroughly and wax the entire surface.

2. Check the Fluids

3. Inspect Wiring

Open the engine compartment to check the electrical system. The connections should be clean, tight, and free of corrosion. Remove any corroded terminals and clean them with a wire brush. Charge the battery and test it to ensure it can hold the necessary charge.

4. Dry It Out

If you put the boat in storage while wet, the moisture can promote mold and mildew growth. Open the engine cover, cabinets, and seats. Let your boat sit in the sun until it’s dry.

5. Cover It

A cover will protect your boat’s finish from UV rays and the engine from water and corrosion. If your boat will be in covered storage, you can place a tarp over the boat. If it will be out in the open, invest in a higher-quality cover designed for your boat. Popular materials include cotton, vinyl, acrylic, and polyester.
