In northern areas of the U.S., trees can benefit from care during almost every season. The only time your trees’ roots aren’t growing is during the winter when the ground is frozen. Luckily, you can strategically plan your tree services, such as fertilization and pruning, throughout the rest of the year to maximize tree health.

When Should You Schedule Your Tree Services?

Spring

Fertilization can help trees and shrubs increase their resilience to disease and maintain vigorous growth. Yet, it’s only recommended in certain circumstances and at specific times of the year. For example, trees with undersized leaves, diminishing growth rates, and those planted in soil with nutritional deficiencies experience the most significant benefits from fertilization.

Yet, newly planted saplings and trees with severe root damage from trenching or construction need to regrow their root systems before they can benefit from fertilizer. If it is recommended, fertilization should take place in late April or early May, just before major growth takes place.

Summer

tree serviceLate spring and early summer tend to be periods of growth spurts for trees. Growth rates and time periods may vary by species and maturity, however. If you’re looking to make the most of your tree growth during this window, make sure trees have access to the nutrients they need, including sunlight, water, and nutrients in the soil.

Watch for any barriers to these nutrients, such as branches without leaves, excessively dense canopies, or weak or low-hanging branches. If you find that you need it, now is also an excellent time to arrange for tree pruning services.

Fall

As their leaves begin to fall and the temperature begins to cool, your trees’ growth cycle may slow. With that said, they can experience another growth spurt. To make the most of this before plants become fully dormant, you may wish to apply a fertilizer. If you have any at-risk branches, have them removed before winter sets in; high winds and heavy snowfall could cause them to fall.
