Braces are a hallmark of the teenage years. However, they can also be applied earlier to help kids straighten their teeth quickly and efficiently. The following are a few signs your child is ready for braces, so you can be proactive to improve their oral health.

3 Signs Your Child is Ready for Braces

1. Complaints

While visibly crooked teeth may gradually straighten out over time, some children struggle with chewing if their teeth are crooked enough. Some kids develop problems with biting the sides of their cheeks or lips as they eat or talk, which could cause lacerations, swelling, and discomfort. If they mention any of these issues, ask your dentist if braces would help.

2. Age

Because some aspects of orthodontic care are easier before your child’s mouth is completely done growing, the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends scheduling a checkup with an orthodontist for your child no later than the age of 7. However, the most common time for kids to get braces is between the ages of 9 and 14, so you should still take them to the orthodontist if you’ve missed the recommended deadline.

3. Oral Hygiene Abilities

Talk with your child’s dentist about their dental health and check whether they have been brushing and flossing properly. If not, work on those skills with your child before getting braces to prevent decay.
