A home’s water heater is one of the most important parts of the residential plumbing system. When it’s not working, you won’t have a hot source, and what is still coming out will have a cloudy appearance. One of the most common indicators that there’s a problem with this part of the residential plumbing is a leak, but before calling a plumber for repairs, it’s helpful to know the source of the issue.

3 Types of Water Heater Leaks

1. Water Supply Lines

Residential PlumbingFirst, check the water supply pipes located on the outer part of the top of the tank. The liquid feeds into the tank from an outside source, and any damage to these two thin metal pipes can result in a leak. Professionals may either repair the lines or replace them outright.

2. Valve Leaks

Another common area for leaks is the temperature pressure relief valve. There are many reasons the valve can become damaged. This is on the upper or top part of the tank, and it was installed or sealed incorrectly, resulting in water running down the side of the unit. If the valve is damaged, the water temperature or pressure in your home will be too high. To fix these issues, the plumbing company may install a water expansion tank or replace the pressure regulator.

3. Drain Line

There is a drain pan located underneath the tank. This prevents any water heater leaks from spreading throughout your home, and attached to this is a drainpipe to remove the liquid. If there is no sign of water on the top or side of the tank, it’s a problem with the drainpipe. A professional can  tighten the pipe to secure the connection or replace it if it’s damaged.
