Beyond his distinct style of crooning often heard in bars and lounges, Frank Sinatra made an indelible mark on the history of music, becoming one of the most influential and highest-selling recording artists of all time. His moniker, Chairman of the Board, best described him—he did everything his way.

Who Was Frank Sinatra?

Born Francis Albert “Frank” Sinatra to Italian immigrants, he was a boy who learned the way of the streets at a young age. He never liked school and left at the age of 16 to work. However, Frank quickly got bored with work, hopping from one job to another, exasperating his father to no end. Young Sinatra would eventually pack his bags to escape his disapproving father and head to New York City to become a singer.

Life in the Big Apple wasn’t all that jazz and Frank struggled to find singing gigs. With nothing left, he went back home to start anew. He landed a job as a singer in a Hoboken lounge, but it ended soon after he got into a fight. Frank ingeniously wedged himself into the local club scene by collecting musical arrangements. And when bands used them, they had to take him as the singer.

Soon, Frank had consistent gigs at lounges and roadhouses. His break came when his group, “Hoboken Four,” became a popular act on the NBC radio show, Major Bowes and His Original Amateur Hour, in 1935. It was four years later when Frank impressed Harry James of the eponymous band. And the rest was history.

How He Changed the World

loungesDuring his time, Frank Sinatra was a force to be reckoned with, using his voice to shake things up. He made it a point to acknowledge the songwriters and composers behind the songs—they were as important as him in crafting a hit. He recognized creative talents and made them known.

He also championed the civil rights of African-American musicians. During the tumultuous period of segregation, he ensured that they were treated well and respected when they performed alongside him.

Musically, Sinatra wanted direction and cohesiveness in his playlists, spawning the idea of a concept album back when singers cared less about the lineup. He also came out with an album wherein his duets were recorded at different places and times.
