Your door locks are your home’s first line of defense. Though small and often overlooked, the lock on your front door requires occasional maintenance, just like everything else in your home. Maintaining your locks is a simple process, and taking the time to do so helps prevent a variety of issues, from lockouts to break-ins. Here are three tasks you should perform regularly to keep your locks in good shape.

3 Tips for Door Lock Maintenance

1. Inspect

Check the strike plates and latches for signs of wear, deterioration, or loosening. Tighten up any loose screws and replace damaged strike plates to prevent problems with your door lock in the future. Close the door and test the deadbolt by locking and unlocking it. If you meet any resistance, check to make sure the hole in the doorjamb is deep enough for the bolt to fit securely into it.

2. Clean

Door LocksExternal cleaning of your door lock helps to prevent dirt and debris from getting inside. Use a mild soap and water to wash the exterior of the lock. Rinse it with a damp cloth. Avoid the use of chemicals, abrasives, and petroleum-based products, as these can wear away the protective coating on most locks.

3. Lubricate

Lubricate your locks annually with a graphite or silicone lubricant. Avoid using petroleum-based lubricants as these can gum up the internal parts. Spray the lubricant into the lock and onto your key. Insert your key into the lock and pull it back out several times to spread the lubricant around within the lock. Not only does this help to clean out any dirt and dust, but it also lubricates the internal parts to keep them working smoothly.
