After you post bail and get out of jail, you need to be cautious about how you spend the time leading up to your trial or court date. Using this time effectively can help you prepare for upcoming legal matters and prove to judges and officers that you are taking the process seriously. Be aware of the following do’s and don’ts while out on bail.

Do:

Keep in touch with your lawyer.

Whether you hired a private lawyer or a public defender represents you, keep in touch with them. Let the attorney know if you have any problems or questions, and make them aware if you are concerned about any upcoming appointments. Spend time meeting with them and providing any information they ask for that could help prepare your defense.

Stay focused on your responsibilities.

post-bail Minneapolis, MNIf you have a job or are self-employed, continue to work as best you can. Keep up with your legal and family responsibilities, including filing taxes and paying child support. If the court has ordered you to stay away from former colleagues or friends, specifically those with criminal records, make sure to do so.

Don’t:

Hang out with trouble makers.

If you frequented places that attract trouble, be sure to keep your distance while on bail. This also applies to individuals who had a penchant for getting you into tricky situations. If your list of go-to places includes bars, strip clubs, and pool halls, be sure to avoid them. Being caught in difficult situations can reflect poorly on you and could potentially be used against you in court.

Forget court dates.

Ask your bail bondsman and lawyer to remind you when you need to be in court. Set your alarm and plan to get there early to exhibit that you are taking the process seriously. If you miss a court date, the judge can issue a warrant for your arrest, and you would forfeit your bail money and have to post bail again. Missing court, or even being late, could result in you losing another chance at obtaining bail.

If you do miss court, don’t panic. Contact your lawyer and bail bondsman immediately. They will contact the court for you to prevent the judge from issuing an arrest warrant.
