Whether your parking lot is made of asphalt or concrete, you need to clean it regularly to maintain your building’s appearance and functionality. If you’ve never cleaned your parking lot before or wish to clean it more effectively, here are three tips for keeping your parking lot in ideal condition.

How Should You Clean Your Parking Lot?

1. Sweep Regularly

No matter how many trash cans you place near your parking lot, some people will still litter. Since a trash-filled parking lot makes a negative first impression, it’s important to regularly sweep your parking lot and remove all traces of litter. As you sweep, look for any cracks, potholes, and other forms of damage so you can call a paving contractor before the issue worsens.

2. Remove Stains Quickly

asphaltOver time, parking lots accumulate stains from sources such as grease, oil, and mulch. These stains significantly reduce your building’s curb appeal, so you should remove them as quickly as possible. For an asphalt parking lot, apply trisodium phosphate, bleach, or baking soda to the stain, and then scrub the area with a broom. For a concrete parking lot, let soda soak on the stain overnight, and then scrub it with warm water and dishwashing liquid.

3. Sealcoat

Instead of just correcting unsightly issues when they emerge, prevent them from forming in the first place by sealcoating your parking lot every two years or so. The seal will protect your lot from the elements and external factors that lead to cracks, stains, and other problems. With a sparkling, sealed parking lot, your building will make an excellent first impression.
