Winter brings with it potentially dangerous driving conditions. Between heavy snowfall, frigid temperatures, and icy roads, it’s critical that your car is in its best shape to help you avoid accidents. Here are three key ways to reduce your risk of injuries and the need for collision repair.

How to Winterize Your Car

1. Replace Fluid Levels

Your car needs a number of fluids to run properly—from antifreeze to brake fluid. Before temperatures drop in winter, you’ll want to replenish all of these with varieties suitable for the local climate. For instance, have an oil change with a cold weather-specific oil to help the engine start in colder temperatures. Swap out the washer fluid with a winter-friendly variety as well to ensure it doesn’t freeze.

2. Inspect & Replace the Tires

Before temperatures drop, have yours examined for thin or uneven tread wear and make sure they have adequate air pressure. Damaged tires have reduced traction and won’t be able to properly grip the road in icy conditions. After changing out old tires, you may also apply a tire coating to help repel precipitation and avoid the need for collision repair.

3. Check the Battery

It’s also important that your battery is functioning properly before winter. Pay attention if the headlights seem dimmer than normal, if the engine seems to start up slowly, or if you hear a strange clicking sound when putting your key in. If so, have the vehicle seen by a mechanic, who can also check the cables running to your battery and inspect them for cracks.
