Storage units are convenient because you can put your spare office supplies or holiday decorations in the space without worrying about their safety. While you can store almost anything in your unit, some items are problematic. The list below details certain items you should never store in your unit.

What to Never Put in Storage Units

1. Food

Food attracts pests, especially mice. These critters can sniff out your food from a significant distance and chew through boxes or cans to reach it. Keep in mind that pests may think some items are edible due to their smells. Potpourri and décor that includes seeds or dried plants will attract them, for example, so make sure to keep these away from your unit.

2. Flammable or Toxic Items

Flammable items include kerosene, gasoline, propane tanks, motor oil, compressed gas, fireworks, explosives, and ammunition. Other toxic items to avoid include fertilizer, grease, and paint. If you’re unsure whether your item is flammable or toxic, call your rental company to discuss your concerns right away.

3. Antique Furniture & Art

The extreme temperature fluctuations can cause your antique furniture or canvas artwork to expand and shrink. The moisture in the air will also affect wood, causing it to warp. These priceless items should be kept in a location where you have better control over their environment.

4. Electronics

Electronics have metal components, as well as batteries. The moisture in the air will corrode that metal over time, destroying your devices. The batteries may also be considered hazardous by your rental unit. Televisions and computers can be stored over a short period if you use a dehumidifier but try not to keep them in the unit for months at a time to avoid damaging them.
