Oklahoma has had almost 150 tornadoes so far this year. That’s why its residents need to know how tornadoes develop and act so they can seek a nearby storm shelter in an emergency. If you are new to the area or are just learning about twisters for the first time, use this guide to familiarize yourself with this weather phenomenon and the dangers it can pose.

What Is a Tornado & How Does It Form?

A tornado is a rotating column of air that can develop during a thunderstorm. The most dangerous ones occur from supercells, which are rotating thunderstorms with clearly defined mesocyclones—the radar signature of a rotating vortex.

In these storms, tornadoes are believed to develop as a result of temperature differences in the air, the hot air rising and cool air sinking moving quickly enough it starts spinning. However, for a tornado to actually form, a condensation funnel, which is made up of water droplets, must extend from the base of the storm to the ground; otherwise, it remains a funnel cloud.

How Are Tornadoes Dangerous?

Tornadoes can produce strong winds, up to 300 miles per hour, capable of ripping up trees and demolishing homes. Even weaker tornadoes can create winds strong enough to pull up roof shingles and fling debris hard enough to cause injuries. Many tornadoes are often accompanied by hail and lightning.

While modern meteorologists now have the equipment and tools to anticipate where a tornado might form—and what path it might take—these funnels can appear or veer suddenly. Therefore, families should already have an established plan ready to put into action.

Make sure not to venture out even as the weather calms—as you might be in the “eye” of the storm. Instead, wait until you receive a confirmation of safety from local weather reports before emerging.

Ensure your family is safe whenever the tornado sirens go off by having the professionals at G & M Tank Co install a concrete storm shelter at your home.
